Consider Hosting a Re-Ignite Retreat

This is a critical time in the life of Boomers. Many are contemplating what life ahead will be like. Will it include retiring from full-time work,  maybe traveling the world? Or sliding comfortably into the recliner with a firm grip on the remote control? Or does God have something else in mind? Does He have a new purpose for this chapter of life – for YOUR next chapter?

The Re-Ignite Retreat is designed for those considering the possibilities for this unique and dynamic time of life. During this 48-hour transformational retreat, participants will consider how God has uniquely created them, guided their life’s journey, gifted them, and is now calling them to discover purpose and passion for life and ministry.

June 23 – Nashville to Chattanooga, TN. Travel to Chattanooga and enjoy free time to explore the city before heading for a entertaining evening at the Civil War Dinner Theater. Overnight at the Hampton Inn Downtown.

June 24 -  Chattanooga – Bryson City- Asheville, NC. Today our great adventure in Bryson City is to board the Smoky Mountain Railroad for a four and a half hour train trip from Bryson City to Dillsboro along the Tuckasegee River. We will have a one hour layover in Dillsboro for fee time where you can shop or relax with an ice cream cone or snack. Afterwards we will have dinner at the Historical Jarrett House established in 1884. Its Victorian style Inn and family style dining have made this a favorite and very popular place to stop. Then we drive to Asheville NC and check into the Fairfield Inn.

June 25 – Biltmore House & Gardens and The Cove. This morning we will tour the Biltmore House and Gardens. This beautiful mansion was a home for the Vanderbilt Family, and is the largest single family dwelling in the country, covering more than 125,000 square feet. The beauty of this grand home extends out-of-doors to its gardens and managed woodland designed by America’s Father of Landscape Architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. Enjoy lunch at the Deerpark restaurant. In the afternoon you will check into The Cove for your 3-Day conference with Cliff Barrows.

June 26 – The Cove – Home of Billy Graham. Enjoy a day or learning, spiritual uplift and music including breakfast, lunch and dinner.

June 27 – Asheville, N.C., through the Smokies, to Pigeon Forge, TN. After breakfast we leave The Cove and will take the scenic route through the Smoky Mountains to Pigeon Forge. After traveling through Cherokee and learning about the often heartbreaking history of the Cherokee people we will find ourselves at the Appalachian Trail with one foot in North Carolina and one foot in Tennessee. Enjoy the panoramic picture stops along this beautiful drive. After checking into the Inn at Christmas Place (3 nights) we are off for dinner at the Dixie Stampede.

June 28 – Gatlinburg & Cades Cove. Travel into the mountains to Cades Cove where we will see how our ancestors lived as we take a wagon ride through it, and have a picnic lunch, before going to Gatlinburg for some free time. Return to Pigeon Forge and tonight we will have a scrumptious dinner at the Wood Fire Grill.

June 29 – Pigeon Forge, TN. A fun day! We visit famous Dollywood, (think hillbilly Disneyland) where you will enjoy some shows, crafts, glass blowing and lots more. Be sure to see the tiny house that Dolly grew up in with many brothers and sisters! What side do you think will win at dinner tonight ?? Hatfield or McCoy??

June 30 – Pigeon Forge to Nashville, TN. Today we make our way to the heart of Country and Gospel Music – Nashville! Along the way we will stop at the Museum of Appalachia in Clinton, TN for a tour with a BBQ lunch. After checking into our Marriott hotel we will have dinner at the Opry Grill with a show and Back Stage Tour at the Famous Grand Ole Opry. Each show will feature over 20 acts from the legendary stars to new upcoming young talent.

July 1 – Nashville, TN. After breakfast we will have a guided city tour of Nashville and the Parthenon (yes you will see it!). See the Historic RCA Studio B, the oldest surviving recording studio in Nashville and one of the most famous studios in the world. With a local guide, we will drive by the homes of the stars, through the historic downtown, Music Row and the Governor’s Mansion, and the highlight of the day the ” Wildhorse Saloon”, where you can eat lunch and have some fun with your boots on! You will also visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and tour the Ryman Auditorium, “The Carnegie Hall of the South.” Visit the building that was the Grand Ole Opry’s home for over 30 years. Have your picture taken in front of a life size bronze statue of Roy Acuff and Minnie Pearl. Tonight we will have dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Downtown Nashville.

July 2 – Franklin, TN. Today we visit historic Franklin and tour the Carnton Plantation that served as the largest confederate field hospital in the Civil War at the Battle of Franklin. Then we return to Nashville where we will have time to explore the Opryland Hotel where the Delta area has a scenic river boat ride under the four and half acre glass roof, and the newly re-opened Opry Mills with more than 200 restaurants, stores and performance based venues. Tonight we will enjoy our farewell dinner on the General Jackson Dinner Cruise.

July 3 – Nashville, TN – Fly Home. This morning we will tour Andrew Jacksons’ Hermitage before going to the Nashville Airport for flights returning home; your minds filled with wonderful memories of fun and fellowship and great new friendships that will last forever.

From our Alliance Partners at Fresh Horizons

In August 2011 Fresh Horizons hosted two conferences for those embracing the new wave of ministry to those in life’s second half. Tauranga in New Zealand’s North Island was the host city for the first New Zealand Conference of this kind in the country. A local board working in cooperation with Fresh Horizons Australia staged a fantastic event over two days that drew close to 100 pastors, church leaders and interested Christians from around New Zealand. The following week Caloundra City in South East Queensland hosted their second Australian Conference with over 60 leaders, ministers and interested Christians from as far away as Victoria attending.

Both conferences benefitted from the insights of keynote speaker Ward Tanneberg (USA) who focused on the topic “Influencing the Generations”. A variety of relevant electives were offered and well received that included the topics “Jesus and women in today’s world”, “Positioning and equipping your church to reach and mobilise baby boomers” and “Accentuating the positive.” A valuable feature of both conferences was the panel of practitioners who are successfully involved in second half ministries. New Zealand’s panel featured Tom Frew, a Baptist pastor whose entire ministry focus is on building a vibrant congregation of over 50s. Nan Kingston-Smith focused on health and fitness while Denise Whitehead is involved with the Tauranga City Council exploring the concept of global age friendly cities.

Fresh Horizons is a Kingdom focused ministry established to inspire, educate and equip active Christians to engage in a ministry and evangelism with Baby Boomers and beyond. Learn more at www.freshhorizons.org.au.

Seminar: Igniting Boomers for Significant Impact

“Why are the Boomers in our congregation so uncommitted?  It seems like they used to be so involved and now all they do is attend.”

This question from the Outreach Pastor of a nearby church expresses a growing concern throughout North America. What’s happening to this generation of believers that is supposed to be so interested in “finishing well,” investing their skills and talents, and making a significant impact with the remaining years of their life?

The Finishers Project, partners with the CASA Network, has studied this phenomenon and now offers local churches an opportunity to delve into this challenge. An insightful, one-day seminar is designed to enable church leadership toward a better understanding of, and communication with, this unique boomer generation. It is possible to help them connect with fulfilling ministry roles.

Facilitated by Tom Adelsman, Director of Church Ministries, and Don Parrott, Finishers President, the “Igniting Boomers For Significant Impact” seminar provides a practical understanding of the boomer mindset, why they become less engaged in our churches, and insights into communicating in ways they will hear. The desire of Finishers Project is to help churches mobilize this powerful force of workers for kingdom impact locally and worldwide.

This one-day, adult-learning workshop rotates between short presentations by Adelsman and Parrott, then round-the-table interaction on the questions and challenges presented. Participants and church staff, working with mid-life and beyond adults or lay leadership, leave the four-hour session with a greater understanding of how to help these vital people connect with ministries that utilize their God-given passions.

One recent participant stated, “This meeting was very beneficial to me. It was as advertised!”

We encourage you to contact Finishers Project by phone or email to see if this seminar might be offered in your area. Email: toma@finishers.org, or call 480-854-4444.

Don Parrott is President of Finishers Project. For more information, see their website http://finishers.org/.
